Making a Lavender Wreath (Plus a Little Family Stuff) September 18, 2012

It was time for “Monday Night Football”, last night, so I headed to the craft store. I found these really sweet mini grapevine wreaths for $2.99 each, at Joanne’s. Since I buy lavender in bulk, from a farm here in California, I had plenty of it on hand.

For me, lavender is one of the most wonderful scents on earth!

With my trusty glue gun fired up, I cut about three lavender stems down to just about a half inch below the flower and glued them into place.

Once finished, I Used some jute twine, to hang it from.

Yes, those are gummy bears. I’ve become addicted!

Voila!

20120918-095619.jpg I think this will be a fun project to do in a class at the shop.

Onto some family stuff… For those of you who have lost parents, I’m sure you know what a task it can be to go through their treasures. It’s the kind of thing I could spend days, looking through. I have a footlocker full of memorabilia, including letters from my dad, during World War II and their early years together, that my mom saved. We all got a stack of letters, these glimpses into their life and I have not read mine yet. I’m not sure what I’m waiting for. Along with the letters, I found this school picture, from my dads eighth-grade class.

Dad’s the young man in the top row, in the middle. Since he was born in 1921, this picture had to have been taken in the mid 1930s.

These precious baby shoes, are my dad’s first pair of shoes. I found them folded up in the original red box.

Can you imagine buttoning buttons on a baby’s wiggling feet? What treasures these are for me!

Unfortunately, we have photo albums, filled with beautiful pictures and we don’t know who the people are in the photographs. I would encourage you, if you have the opportunity, to go through these memories, with your parents. It would be time well spent, with your parents and a chance to save family history, well into the future.

Well, that’s about all I have to report on about today. I’m taking a break from painting, to focus on getting ready for my MMS Milk Paint order, arriving on Monday. 9 boxes, 145 pounds!! I need to make sure that I’m ready to ship paint out to all people who have ordered it!!

Enjoy this beautiful fall day!!
Barbara

Thanks for the simple tutorial on the lavender wreaths, I too love the scent of lavender. Two questions:
I live in Miami, Florida and there is no way that lavender grows here! (I’ve tried!) Do you have a good source for lavender bunches you recommend? And secondly, where did you find that amazing confit pot! It is beautiful!

      Hello Ana Maria,
I found my lavender source on line. But that was for a bulk order. I wonder if a local florist or floral supples would sell it? If not, I can ship to you. Thanks for your comment a out the confit pot, I purchased at an estate sale. Most things purchased at these sales are for re-sale, but this was a keeper!

The wreath is beautiful! I’d tie a lavender satin ribbon around or on the back to hang it. Those little baby shoes are so precious. Oh, and my mantra as a scrapboomer is journal! Who what and where!

      Hello Debbie,
Yes, these wreaths have lots of possibilities! Lavender ribbon would be nice, too. And, I hope the historians stop by your house, where organization and notes will be found a plenty. They’ll be scratching their heads, over here!

Gorgeous wreath Barbara! And those baby booties – precious. My sister is really fired up about our family history, so she is doing what you recommend – I’m glad she’s motivated because it’s quite the project!

Barbara…love that wreath…how great to have such a wonderful supplier of lavender near you…and yes, I can spot Gummy Bears a mile away!!…and you are so right…my friend is going through many of her parents’ photos and is frustrated that she does not know many of the people in the very old pictures…
    Have a wonderful week!

Barbara the lavender wreath is beautiful! My sibling and I try to ask my parents questions about their youth, so that we can record and remember. You father’s shoes are precious!
